Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was established in 1960 and has B.Sc. Botany (UG). M.sc Botany (PG) with specialization was started from the academic session 1973-74. The department is well equipped with laboratory with modern instruments. The department is enriched with learning resources such as charts, slides,models, herbarium which help the students in independent learning. The main thrust area of teaching is Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology,Biochemistry, Cytogenetics & Plant Breeding, Plant Ecology, Environmental Botany, Plant Biotechnology, Microbiology,Ethnobotany, Systematic botany, along with teaching activities include under-graduate and post-graduate courses and research activities for Ph.D. program is ongoing . The department has made a steady progress in all these areas.
At present, 01Professor, 01Associate Professor, 03Assistant Professors and 01 Guest faculty with 04 supporting staff are working in the department. The department has produced 03 Ph.D. and About 80 research papers are different aspects have been published. The department has also organized Seminars/Conferences/ workshops, plantation, poster presentation, science motivational programs, Eco-club, Green Corridor and many other activities.The department also organizes many training programs for students through Project, internships, invites lecture by subject experts.The department has distinction in having its alumni placed at various respectable positions all over the Countryikeworking as a senior scientist at CFTRI, Mysore, and some other students are working in the Indian Forest Services, State Administrative Services, Banking Services, Indian Railways, some of them working as Professors in Higher Education Department etc.
The departmental library has a significant number of books and journals. The department also maintains a Botanical Garden with various medicinal plants, which inculcate the research knowledge to the students. Botany department has conducted Botanical excursion tours to important places in the state and the country to study vegetation and collected important information and materials. B.Sc. and M.Sc. inMicrobiology is also conducted by the Self Finance with Co-operation of Head of Department. Dr. Alka Pandey registered with Barkatullah University as a research guide for Ph.D. work. In her guidance two Ph.D. are awarded in Botany, one Ph.D. awarded in Microbiology and one registered in Microbiology.
